I’m a daddy’s girl. I have always been a daddy’s girl. I think the world of my father, as the fortunate women do. My father has always been a man of few words, but there are certain phrases that I associate with my father. One such phrase is, “what cha’ know good?” While Dad was never a big talker, he was a fairly friendly guy. In my family we speak and greet folks. As my folks always said, “it doesn’t cost anything to say hello.” So we speak.

What cha’ know good was one such phrase and greeting. As I contemplate my business, I often think of why I’m going this path. I am reminded of the quote of Henry David Thoreau: “Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something.” I love that quote because I believe it reminds us of our obligation as members of the community. We must be more, give more and and love more. It is not enough to operate in the world with a simple be a good person goal, while that is the starting point, we must do more.

As we are all endowed with certain unique and special gifts, we have an obligation to discover those gifts and bring them into the world. Everything we could ever need already exists in the Universe. It is our job answer our soul call and bring forth our special addition to make the world a better place. Because do no harm is not enough, and just being good is not good enough. We must be good for something. As we contemplate a new year, let us all consider how we each can be good for something.
